Travel Insurance for Europe
Before you go on your trip to Europe, consider the benefits of travel insurance cover.- Why should I consider travel insurance for Europe?
- Am I covered for multiple countires within Europe?
- What am I covered for when going to Europe?
- Cover for unexpected events out of your control
- Travel with confidence
- Does Medicare cover me in Europe?
- What to look out for when planning a trip to Europe
Why should I consider travel insurance for Europe?
Europe has history, culture, food and all types of exciting activities around every corner. With more than 20 beautiful destinations to choose from in the EU you’ll be enjoying sun, snow and everything in between.
However, you could have a close encounter of the third kind with a Swiss snowstorm, too much yummy Italian which could lead to food poisoning or be the victim of a fast-fingered pickpocket in Spain. There are a lot of 'what ifs' to consider when heading to Europe.
Am I covered for multiple countries within Europe?
We offer travel insurance cover for Europe for many events. For example, if you plan to travel to multiple countries within Europe, all you need to do is select 'Europe' as your destination when you get a quote and add any countries in Europe you know you’ll visit for more than 24 hours.
You can also select multiple countries, regions or continents on one quote or if you’re a seasoned globetrotter, you can also select ‘worldwide.’
Note that there are regions and countries that are not covered by TID, so make sure to check the details on your Certificate of Insurance and subscribe to Smartraveller for the latest travel advice.
What am I covered for when going to Europe?
When travelling to any EU country, you will have access to several benefits with TID travel insurance. It all depends on which level of cover is best suited for your Euro trip. Some of the benefits we offer include:
- Cover for overseas medical expenses
- Medical repatriation and evacuation
- Cover for lost or damaged valuables
- Cover for lost, stolen or delayed baggage
- Cover for cancellation or trip delay
- Cover for some Coronavirus-related events
Cover for unexpected events out of your control
We can offer cover under the ‘Cancellation and additional expenses’ section for your planned trip if your pre-paid scheduled public transport services or pre-paid tour have been cancelled or restricted by your carrier or service provider because of severe weather, natural disaster, riot, strike, civil insurrection, or hijacking. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for further details.
We aim to keep you informed about events around the world when they happen, so keep an eye out for travel alerts on our website, however please check smartraveller for the international destination you are travelling to prior to travelling or planning to travel to a destination.
Travel with confidence
Our 24-hour Emergency Assistance team is always available to help you if you suffer a serious injury or sudden illness. The team will also work closely with the claims department, which will assess your entitlement to financial assistance.
Our travel safety team at TID work to keep customers informed and publish information on major events on our website.
Contact the Emergency Assistance team day or night as required.
Does Medicare cover me in Europe?
No, Australia does not have a reciprocal health care agreement with every country in Europe. As a result, you will need to pay for all emergency medical costs out of your own pocket or via your travel insurer. In some cases, Medicare's overseas healthcare agreements assist with essential healthcare costs in: Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Republic of Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden and the UK.
What to look out for when planning a trip to Europe
There are some things you should keep in mind below just in case you need to use your travel insurance when going to Europe from Australia.
- Severe weather: when going to Europe you’ll need to be aware of possible severe weather events such as snowstorms or wildfires. Some parts of Europe are also prone to natural disasters such as flooding or bushfires. Always refer to the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website for current travel alerts affecting Europe before you buy a policy, before you leave Australia, and during your travels. If your trip is interrupted or cancelled because of severe weather, you may be able to claim.
- Pickpockets and theft: while Europe is a safe place to visit, you should always keep an eye out for pickpockets and watch your valuables. While Europeans are some of the friendliest people, there is always the chance that a thief will strike when you’re not looking. Always keep an eye on your bags and valuables and beware of pickpockets in the major cities such as Barcelona, Paris, and Rome. Keep copies or originals of receipts for any gear and valuables that you purchase.
- Trip delays, interruptions, and cancelled flights: the last thing you want to deal with while travelling around Europe is an extended stay at an airport. If your flight is delayed or cancelled you can submit a claim for reasonable expenses you may incur (don’t go buying a fancy designer dress or a tailored suit, we mean t-shirt, toothbrush or the essentials). Also, be aware that a trip to Europe may include several stops, so you may have multiple flights and accommodation that has been paid in advance. If you need to return home due to a covered reason listed in the TID policy, you may be covered for trip interruption benefits to cover last-minute flight changes, and recoup any deposits, payments and expenses that you will lose.
- Activities and sports injuries and gear cover while in Europe: with so many awesome destinations to choose from, Europe has something that will appeal to adrenaline junkies and outdoorsy types. Whether you’re into your snow sports (*cover for snow sports only available when you have selected the Snow sports cover option and paid the additional premium cover option), you’re a water baby, or you prefer to get your kicks from bungee jumping or rock climbing, you can be covered for a wide range of sports and activities. If something goes wrong and you injure yourself, a TID policy may be able to help with medical assistance, evacuation, and in the worst-case scenario, repatriation back home to Australia if medically necessary and approved by us. If you’ve decided to travel with your own surfboard or golfing equipment, there’s cover (benefit limits apply) on The Works and Annual Multi Trip plans to hire replacement equipment if your own is accidentally lost, delayed or damaged during your trip.

Travel Insurance for the USA
Before you head to the States, consider travel insurance with TID.- Why should I consider travel insurance in the USA?
- Do I need a visa to get into the USA from Down Under?
- Hit the road with rental vehicle excess cover
- Travel Safe in the USA
- What do I do if I need urgent assistance?
- Best time to travel to the USA
Visiting America is always going to be an experience whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned traveller to the land of the stars and stripes. You have the glitz of Las Vegas, the laid-back lifestyle of Hawaii, and the mix of cultures, nightlife and music of New Orleans.
With so much to explore, you may want to consider taking out TID travel insurance as it could come in handy if that boys road trip along Route 66 hits the brakes, you have an injury while exploring the great outdoors trying to get that perfect selfie, or if your flight is delayed or cancelled and your stuck in an airport indefinitely (not on our to do list when visiting the US!).
Why should I consider travel insurance in the USA?
From the dramatic cityscapes of New York to the gnarly waves of Maui – you can pack a lot into a trip from Australia to America. Aside from the accent, the currency and driving on the wrong side of the road, the culture is not too dissimilar from ours. Except there's one big difference: America is more than 15,000km away and there are plenty of places to visit that are not New York City, Las Vegas and LA. If something were to go wrong, it would be hard for you to get home quickly.
When you consider travel insurance for America, you're not just covering yourself against things like huge medical bills and theft, you also gain access to a global network which can offer you guidance and support if things go wrong. Travel insurance offers optional extras to tailor cover to suit your needs.

Do I need a visa to get into the USA from Down Under?
If you are an Aussie planning a trip to the US, you’re probably asking yourself if you need a visa to travel to the USA. If you plan to remain in the USA for less than 90 days, you may not need a visa, but will need to apply for a US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). It takes about 15- 20 minutes to complete, and according to US Customs and Border Patrol, the ESTA will usually return an application status within 72 hours.
Note: Always check the travel requirements and restrictions for the countries you are planning to visit as rules and restrictions are subject to change.
Hit the road with rental vehicle excess cover
One of the best ways to discover and explore the USA is by road. You may need some extra days for some of the longer road trips, but it will be worth every penny as there are some incredible road trips to choose from, some of these include:
- S. Route 66
- Great River Road
- The Loneliest Road in America
- Vermont Route 100
You can rest assured knowing that TID policies automatically include rental vehicle insurance excess coverage if your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen while it's in your care. Check out our Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess Cover article to find out more information around coverage.
Travel safe in the USA
Despite some scary news headlines, travelling to the USA is safe. Spread across 50 states, some parts of the country are more secure than others, with most crime occurring in more urban areas. If you’re travelling to America, take precautions and keep your wits about you. Some things to look out for are:
- Customs: While Australian citizens can buy an ESTA quite easily, be wary when entering the US as there are strict customs laws. Read up on border protection’s restricted items and be prepared to have your fingerprints taken.
- Crime: Petty theft and pickpocketing do occur in some areas of America. Stay vigilant, keep your belongings secure and report any items stolen immediately.
- Tickets: America isn’t short of concerts, sports games and shows to go to. If you’re planning on buying tickets, watch out for scammers who sell fakes or use the transaction to steal your card details.
- Car theft: Reports of thieves stealing cars are still rife in the States, so if you’re hiring a car, park it in a safe lot and don’t leave any valuables inside.
What do I do if I need urgent assistance?
Anything can happen when you travel to the US. The last thing you want is your USA holiday to turn into a nightmare because you didn’t consider travel insurance for medical emergencies, and other types of emergencies.
If your trip to the USA gets trumped by sudden illness or serious injury, our Emergency Assistance Team are on call to help get you back on your feet and exploring ‘the city that never sleeps’ or hiking the trails of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The EA team are here to help in any kind of medical emergency, and ready to answer urgent questions as they arise.
Best time to travel to the USA
Deciding when to travel to America really depends on the type of holiday you want and how much budget you must spend.
- Weather: The USA is a vast country, with diverse seasons across all four corners
- North: Comfortable summers and snowy winters
- East: Hot summers and cold winters
- South: Humid summers and mild winters
- West: Year-round warmth with hotter summers
- Busy times: High season in the US is in June, July and August, so most places will be busier during these months.
- Best flight deals: The cheapest month to fly to America is usually February but watch out! Some places can get cold at that time of year.
Always refer to the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website for current travel alerts affecting the USA before you buy a policy, before you leave Australia, and during your travels. TID’s Travel Alerts page is also an important page to keep bookmarked.

Travel Insurance for Bali
Enjoy your trip to Bali by considering travel insurance. Why should I consider travel insurance in Bali?
As one of Indonesia’s most popular islands, Bali attracts plenty of surf-crazy tourists, food-loving travellers, and those keen on tapping into their spiritual side. Like all international destinations, Bali can throw curveballs in the direction of trusting tourists, which is where TID travel insurance may come in handy. Drink spiking is something to be vigilant about as it can result in a trip to the hospital or worse. Petty theft does occur, particularly in tourist areas, and of course, every year there are accidents and injuries caused by the many activities and adventures travellers tackle in Bali.
What can travel insurance cover me for in Bali?
Once flights, accommodation and any intended activities are booked, the rest is in the hands of the travel gods with travellers at the mercy of arrival and departure times, luggage transfers, and weather conditions. Here are some of the cover benefits available when you take out a TID insurance policy.
Overseas medical expenses
When you change climates and diet, illness can creep in. While no one likes getting sick on holiday, it can happen. Most of our travel insurance plans (excluding Domestic) provide unlimited cover for overseas ambulance, hospital bills and more.
Gadget cover
TID’s international policies may cover valuable electronic items, such as cameras, laptops and phones if they're stolen, permanently lost or damaged. You can purchase extra cover for your valuable items for an additional premium. If you need to make a luggage claim, please ensure you understand what we require.
Tour cancellation
Your TID policy – whichever level of cover you choose – may cover you if you have to cancel your trip due to unforeseeable events. If you've arranged an excursion and the tour operator cancels because of bad weather, or you cannot reach a tour in time because of travel delays, we may be able to reimburse the cost of the tour or portion of the cost that you couldn't attend.
Cancellation/Deferrment
None of us can tell what is going to happen in the future – while you might be thinking it holds relaxing nights gazing at the water as the sun goes down at the Seminyak beach bars, sickness, accidents and more can result in a trip cut short, or a holiday that’s cancelled altogether.
TID travel insurance covers 11 specific events – if these occur you may have cover if you must cancel your holiday, or come home early, because of them. For the cancellation cover to apply, the event must have happened after your Certificate of Insurance was issued – that means if a volcano erupts and your holiday is going up in smoke, it’s too late to purchase travel insurance and hope you’ll be covered.
When choosing the TID policy that suits you best, there is an option to increase the covered amount for cancellation by selecting a benefit limit although there may be additional charges accordingly. Sub limits apply, and remember, if you simply change your mind about your trip, you’re unlikely to be covered.
Natural Disasters
As the go-to Indonesian island, Bali is prone to floods, earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. And while it’s not something we like to think about, it should be a consideration and you should do your research before you set off.
When any of these occur, domestic and international flights are often thrown into chaos, bookings are forced to be shuffled, and in some cases, a diversion to another destination is required.
Travel insurance may help ease the financial burden if it’s an unexpected disaster. If however, it’s a known likelihood that there may be a natural disaster, such as the eruption of Mt Agung which has disrupted flights on many an occasion, then it may not be covered.
You can check our travel alerts before you go and keep an eye on government advisories for your destination.
Sports and Activities
Adrenaline junkies who have surfing, rafting or trekking on their Bali to-do list, will know that adventure travel comes with a risk. If something goes wrong and you injure yourself, a TID policy may be able to help with medical assistance, evacuation, and in the worst-case scenario, repatriation back home if medically necessary and approved by us. And if you’ve decided to take your own golf or surfing equipment with you, there’s cover (benefit limits apply) on The Works and Annual Multi Trip plans to hire replacement equipment if your own is accidentally lost, delayed or damaged during your trip.
For more on the sports and activities TID covers, head here.

Those wishing to take a well-deserved break from studying can find solace in Bali. Whether you're travelling with school friends or venturing solo, the streets of Bali are often filled with fellow pupils seeking a taste of culture without being too far away from home.
Groups
Whether it's a big birthday bash or pre-wedding party, Bali knows how to accommodate group getaways. Group-friendly hotels scatter the island offering amenities to keep everybody happy. Travel Safe in Bali
While Bali is relatively safe to visit, it's always good to know some tips to make sure you've always got safety on your side.
- Dodge theft: keep valuables in a bum bag, don't leave anything worth stealing in your hotel and lock your room at night.
- Avoid Arak: cases of methanol poisoning have been reported because of this traditional Balinese drink. Only consume drinks from a reputable bar.
- Stay healthy: wear plenty of insect repellent and sunscreen and do not drink the tap water or drinks with ice.
- Cheeky monkeys: visiting the monkey forest in Ubud? Don't take food, hide your sunglasses and avoid grinning with your teeth at them.
To find out more about the dangers and possible threats before booking your trip, be sure to check TID’s Travel Alerts page.
Best time to travel to Bali
Bali is a pleasure to travel around at any time of year, but there are certain seasons that are cheaper and have better weather conditions.
- Best weather: Bali is warm throughout the year, but the dry season between May and October is the most favourable.
- Peak times: the tourist season runs from July to August, so flight and hotel prices may be higher during these months.
- National holidays: Usually taking place in June, Idul Fitri is a two-day public holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, attracting large crowds.
