Travel Insurance for Europe

Before you go on your trip to Europe, consider the benefits of travel insurance cover.

Why should I consider travel insurance for Europe?

Europe has history, culture, food and all types of exciting activities around every corner. With more than 20 beautiful destinations to choose from in the EU you’ll be enjoying sun, snow and everything in between.

However, you could have a close encounter of the third kind with a Swiss snowstorm, too much yummy Italian which could lead to food poisoning or be the victim of a fast-fingered pickpocket in Spain. There are a lot of 'what ifs' to consider when heading to Europe.

Am I covered for multiple countries within Europe?

We offer travel insurance cover for Europe for many events. For example, if you plan to travel to multiple countries within Europe, all you need to do is select 'Europe' as your destination when you get a quote and add any countries in Europe you know you’ll visit for more than 24 hours.

You can also select multiple countries, regions or continents on one quote or if you’re a seasoned globetrotter, you can also select ‘worldwide.’

Note that there are regions and countries that are not covered by TID, so make sure to check the details on your Certificate of Insurance and subscribe to Smartraveller for the latest travel advice.

What am I covered for when going to Europe?

When travelling to any EU country, you will have access to several benefits with TID travel insurance. It all depends on which level of cover is best suited for your Euro trip. Some of the benefits we offer include:

- Cover for overseas medical expenses
- Medical repatriation and evacuation
- Cover for lost or damaged valuables
- Cover for lost, stolen or delayed baggage
- Cover for cancellation or trip delay
- Cover for some Coronavirus-related events

Cover for unexpected events out of your control

We can offer cover under the ‘Cancellation and additional expenses’ section for your planned trip if your pre-paid scheduled public transport services or pre-paid tour have been cancelled or restricted by your carrier or service provider because of severe weather, natural disaster, riot, strike, civil insurrection, or hijacking. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for further details.

We aim to keep you informed about events around the world when they happen, so keep an eye out for travel alerts on our website, however please check smartraveller for the international destination you are travelling to prior to travelling or planning to travel to a destination.

Travel with confidence

Our 24-hour Emergency Assistance team is always available to help you if you suffer a serious injury or sudden illness. The team will also work closely with the claims department, which will assess your entitlement to financial assistance.

Our travel safety team at TID work to keep customers informed and publish information on major events on our website.

Contact the Emergency Assistance team day or night as required.

Does Medicare cover me in Europe?

No, Australia does not have a reciprocal health care agreement with every country in Europe. As a result, you will need to pay for all emergency medical costs out of your own pocket or via your travel insurer. In some cases, Medicare's overseas healthcare agreements assist with essential healthcare costs in: Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Republic of Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden and the UK.

What to look out for when planning a trip to Europe

There are some things you should keep in mind below just in case you need to use your travel insurance when going to Europe from Australia.

  1. Severe weather: when going to Europe you’ll need to be aware of possible severe weather events such as snowstorms or wildfires. Some parts of Europe are also prone to natural disasters such as flooding or bushfires. Always refer to the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website for current travel alerts affecting Europe before you buy a policy, before you leave Australia, and during your travels. If your trip is interrupted or cancelled because of severe weather, you may be able to claim.
  2. Pickpockets and theft: while Europe is a safe place to visit, you should always keep an eye out for pickpockets and watch your valuables. While Europeans are some of the friendliest people, there is always the chance that a thief will strike when you’re not looking. Always keep an eye on your bags and valuables and beware of pickpockets in the major cities such as Barcelona, Paris, and Rome. Keep copies or originals of receipts for any gear and valuables that you purchase.
  3. Trip delays, interruptions, and cancelled flights: the last thing you want to deal with while travelling around Europe is an extended stay at an airport. If your flight is delayed or cancelled you can submit a claim for reasonable expenses you may incur (don’t go buying a fancy designer dress or a tailored suit, we mean t-shirt, toothbrush or the essentials). Also, be aware that a trip to Europe may include several stops, so you may have multiple flights and accommodation that has been paid in advance. If you need to return home due to a covered reason listed in the TID policy, you may be covered for trip interruption benefits to cover last-minute flight changes, and recoup any deposits, payments and expenses that you will lose.
  4. Activities and sports injuries and gear cover while in Europe: with so many awesome destinations to choose from, Europe has something that will appeal to adrenaline junkies and outdoorsy types. Whether you’re into your snow sports (*cover for snow sports only available when you have selected the Snow sports cover option and paid the additional premium cover option), you’re a water baby, or you prefer to get your kicks from bungee jumping or rock climbing, you can be covered for a wide range of sports and activities. If something goes wrong and you injure yourself, a TID policy may be able to help with medical assistance, evacuation, and in the worst-case scenario, repatriation back home to Australia if medically necessary and approved by us. If you’ve decided to travel with your own surfboard or golfing equipment, there’s cover (benefit limits apply) on The Works and Annual Multi Trip plans to hire replacement equipment if your own is accidentally lost, delayed or damaged during your trip.

Travel Insurance for the USA

Before you head to the States, consider travel insurance with TID.

Visiting America is always going to be an experience whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned traveller to the land of the stars and stripes. You have the glitz of Las Vegas, the laid-back lifestyle of Hawaii, and the mix of cultures, nightlife and music of New Orleans.

With so much to explore, you may want to consider taking out TID travel insurance as it could come in handy if that boys road trip along Route 66 hits the brakes, you have an injury while exploring the great outdoors trying to get that perfect selfie, or if your flight is delayed or cancelled and your stuck in an airport indefinitely (not on our to do list when visiting the US!).

Why should I consider travel insurance in the USA?

From the dramatic cityscapes of New York to the gnarly waves of Maui – you can pack a lot into a trip from Australia to America. Aside from the accent, the currency and driving on the wrong side of the road, the culture is not too dissimilar from ours. Except there's one big difference: America is more than 15,000km away and there are plenty of places to visit that are not New York City, Las Vegas and LA. If something were to go wrong, it would be hard for you to get home quickly.

When you consider travel insurance for America, you're not just covering yourself against things like huge medical bills and theft, you also gain access to a global network which can offer you guidance and support if things go wrong. Travel insurance offers optional extras to tailor cover to suit your needs.

Get a quote to get your next domestic or international adventure underway today.

Do I need a visa to get into the USA from Down Under?

If you are an Aussie planning a trip to the US, you’re probably asking yourself if you need a visa to travel to the USA. If you plan to remain in the USA for less than 90 days, you may not need a visa, but will need to apply for a US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). It takes about 15- 20 minutes to complete, and according to US Customs and Border Patrol, the ESTA will usually return an application status within 72 hours.

Note: Always check the travel requirements and restrictions for the countries you are planning to visit as rules and restrictions are subject to change.

Hit the road with rental vehicle excess cover

One of the best ways to discover and explore the USA is by road. You may need some extra days for some of the longer road trips, but it will be worth every penny as there are some incredible road trips to choose from, some of these include:

  • S. Route 66
  • Great River Road
  • The Loneliest Road in America
  • Vermont Route 100

You can rest assured knowing that TID policies automatically include rental vehicle insurance excess coverage if your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen while it's in your care.  Check out our Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess Cover article to find out more information around coverage.

Travel safe in the USA

Despite some scary news headlines, travelling to the USA is safe. Spread across 50 states, some parts of the country are more secure than others, with most crime occurring in more urban areas. If you’re travelling to America, take precautions and keep your wits about you. Some things to look out for are:

  • Customs: While Australian citizens can buy an ESTA quite easily, be wary when entering the US as there are strict customs laws. Read up on border protection’s restricted items and be prepared to have your fingerprints taken.
  • Crime: Petty theft and pickpocketing do occur in some areas of America. Stay vigilant, keep your belongings secure and report any items stolen immediately.
  • Tickets: America isn’t short of concerts, sports games and shows to go to. If you’re planning on buying tickets, watch out for scammers who sell fakes or use the transaction to steal your card details.
  • Car theft: Reports of thieves stealing cars are still rife in the States, so if you’re hiring a car, park it in a safe lot and don’t leave any valuables inside.

What do I do if I need urgent assistance?

Anything can happen when you travel to the US. The last thing you want is your USA holiday to turn into a nightmare because you didn’t consider travel insurance for medical emergencies, and other types of emergencies.

If your trip to the USA gets trumped by sudden illness or serious injury, our Emergency Assistance Team are on call to help get you back on your feet and exploring ‘the city that never sleeps’ or hiking the trails of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The EA team are here to help in any kind of medical emergency, and ready to answer urgent questions as they arise.

Best time to travel to the USA

Deciding when to travel to America really depends on the type of holiday you want and how much budget you must spend.

  • Weather: The USA is a vast country, with diverse seasons across all four corners
  • North: Comfortable summers and snowy winters
  • East: Hot summers and cold winters
  • South: Humid summers and mild winters
  • West: Year-round warmth with hotter summers
  • Busy times: High season in the US is in June, July and August, so most places will be busier during these months.
  • Best flight deals: The cheapest month to fly to America is usually February but watch out! Some places can get cold at that time of year.

Always refer to the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website for current travel alerts affecting the USA before you buy a policy, before you leave Australia, and during your travels. TID’s Travel Alerts page is also an important page to keep bookmarked.

Travel Insurance for Bali

Enjoy your trip to Bali by considering travel insurance.

Why should I consider travel insurance in Bali?

As one of Indonesia’s most popular islands, Bali attracts plenty of surf-crazy tourists, food-loving travellers, and those keen on tapping into their spiritual side. Like all international destinations, Bali can throw curveballs in the direction of trusting tourists, which is where TID travel insurance may come in handy. Drink spiking is something to be vigilant about as it can result in a trip to the hospital or worse. Petty theft does occur, particularly in tourist areas, and of course, every year there are accidents and injuries caused by the many activities and adventures travellers tackle in Bali.

What can travel insurance cover me for in Bali?

Once flights, accommodation and any intended activities are booked, the rest is in the hands of the travel gods with travellers at the mercy of arrival and departure times, luggage transfers, and weather conditions. Here are some of the cover benefits available when you take out a TID insurance policy.

emergency icon

Overseas medical expenses

When you change climates and diet, illness can creep in. While no one likes getting sick on holiday, it can happen. Most of our travel insurance plans (excluding Domestic) provide unlimited cover for overseas ambulance, hospital bills and more.

gadget icon

Gadget cover

TID’s international policies may cover valuable electronic items, such as cameras, laptops and phones if they're stolen, permanently lost or damaged. You can purchase extra cover for your valuable items for an additional premium. If you need to make a luggage claim, please ensure you understand what we require.

lost luggage icon

Tour cancellation

Your TID policy – whichever level of cover you choose – may cover you if you have to cancel your trip due to unforeseeable events. If you've arranged an excursion and the tour operator cancels because of bad weather, or you cannot reach a tour in time because of travel delays, we may be able to reimburse the cost of the tour or portion of the cost that you couldn't attend.

Compare all benefits

Cancellation/Deferrment

None of us can tell what is going to happen in the future – while you might be thinking it holds relaxing nights gazing at the water as the sun goes down at the Seminyak beach bars, sickness, accidents and more can result in a trip cut short, or a holiday that’s cancelled altogether.

TID travel insurance covers 11 specific events – if these occur you may have cover if you must cancel your holiday, or come home early, because of them.  For the cancellation cover to apply, the event must have happened after your Certificate of Insurance was issued – that means if a volcano erupts and your holiday is going up in smoke, it’s too late to purchase travel insurance and hope you’ll be covered.

When choosing the TID policy that suits you best, there is an option to increase the covered amount for cancellation by selecting a benefit limit although there may be additional charges accordingly. Sub limits apply, and remember, if you simply change your mind about your trip, you’re unlikely to be covered.

Natural Disasters

As the go-to Indonesian island, Bali is prone to floods, earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. And while it’s not something we like to think about, it should be a consideration and you should do your research before you set off.
When any of these occur, domestic and international flights are often thrown into chaos, bookings are forced to be shuffled, and in some cases, a diversion to another destination is required.

Travel insurance may help ease the financial burden if it’s an unexpected disaster. If however, it’s a known likelihood that there may be a natural disaster, such as the eruption of Mt Agung which has disrupted flights on many an occasion, then it may not be covered.
You can check our travel alerts before you go and keep an eye on government advisories for your destination.

Sports and Activities

Adrenaline junkies who have surfing, rafting or trekking on their Bali to-do list, will know that adventure travel comes with a risk. If something goes wrong and you injure yourself, a TID policy may be able to help with medical assistance, evacuation, and in the worst-case scenario, repatriation back home if medically necessary and approved by us. And if you’ve decided to take your own golf or surfing equipment with you, there’s cover (benefit limits apply) on The Works and Annual Multi Trip plans to hire replacement equipment if your own is accidentally lost, delayed or damaged during your trip.

Bali travel insurance FAQs

Am I covered if I ride a moped, scooter or motorbikes in Bali?

We see a lot of motorcycle accidents and the worst-case scenario is when someone is hurt and has no cover because they didn’t follow the terms and conditions of cover. There are certain terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that apply to coverage for events that occur while riding a motorbike or scooter. If you comply with all of these, then cover may be available if the worst happens and you’re injured or killed.

Am I covered if a volcano erupts, or an ash cloud occurs in Bali?

Your TID policy offers cover for costs you incur because of natural disasters such as a volcanic ash cloud. However, to have cover available, you need to have purchased your policy before the event occurred. However, trip cancellation and rearrangement because of a terror attack is not covered by the policy.

Where do I stand if I’m pickpocketed or mugged?

Travel Insurance for Italy

Before you embrace La Dolce Vita, consider getting a policy with Travel Insurance Direct

Why should I consider travel insurance for Italy?

Pizzerias and gelato shops for days, historic cities that have stood for centuries, breathtaking Renaissance architecture and some of the world’s most visited landmarks, it’s little wonder why Italy is a must-visit for travellers the world over. However, with severe weather, industrial strikes and the threat of pasta related mishaps there’s a lot that can go wrong on your adventure. TID has cover available for the 'What ifs' of travel to Italy.

What are the benefits of TID travel insurance?

Whether you're planning a romantic getaway to Rome or a scenic road trip through Tuscany, this guide will come in handy if you are considering obtaining travel insurance and deciding what would provide you with peace of mind while exploring beautiful Italy

Often, medical expenses may be the number one reason to add travel insurance to your packing list, but sometimes other things can go wrong, such as trip cancellations, unexpected flight delays, lost or stolen luggage or even the big stuff like natural disasters and those pesky pandemics.

TID travel insurance coverage includes:

Best time to travel to Italy

Italy is temperate year-round, but with 62 million travellers converging on its shores each year, it’s worth knowing when to avoid the crowds, set sail on the Mediterranean and meander leisurely through the wineries.

  • Avoid the crowds: October through April are the quietest times, and many major attractions will have much smaller crowds. It’s worth noting that some hotels do opt to close during the colder months so consider that when planning.
  • Peak times: like most of Europe, Italy is a tourist mecca during the summer months (June-August), so if crowds aren't your jam, it's probably best to avoid the major cities at this time.
  • Sail through the Med: just before or after the summer months (April-May, October-November) are the best times. Not only will you avoid the peak prices you’ll also avoid the huge crowds and snap better shots of picturesque Sorrento and Capri.
  • Visit the wineries: grape harvest time (September-October) is the best time to sip. While harvesting dates vary, at this time vineyards are generally full of fruit and the landscape everchanging.

To ensure you don’t get caught short no matter your travel schedule, keep up to date with TID’s Travel Alerts & Warnings.

Traveller tip:  Are you planning to cruise the streets of Napoli on a scooter? Carving up the ski slopes in Cervinia? Or planning to party at a festival or a destination wedding? Make sure you read the fine print on your PDS as you may need to upgrade your policy, or you may not be covered if you don’t stick to the guidelines of your specific policy.

Italy travel insurance FAQs.

Can travel insurance cover my flight cancellation if there is an airline strike in Italy?

Yes, cover is available under your chosen TID policy for the cost of rearranging your trip as a result of corporate takeover or strike that results in your flights being cancelled. To be covered, you must have purchased your policy – The Basics, Works, or Annual Multi Trip - before the event was known.
Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement for further details.

If I’m travelling to Italy which has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Australia, why do I need travel insurance?

The most obvious reason is that you need travel insurance to cover all the non-medical stuff. Your luggage items, your additional or cancellation costs, and other benefits. However, there may be some small amount of medical expenses, as many RHCAs don’t cover pharmacy costs, physiotherapy and similar outpatient expenses. Also, in a terrible scenario, an ambulance may take you to a private hospital if it’s the closest facility, in which case you may end up with a big medical bill despite the RHCA. Currently Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Republic of Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom have RHCA with Australia. For an updated list please check the Australian government's Department of Human Services website.

I’m renting a car in Italy, how to do I ensure my travel insurance covers the car rental excess?

The Works, The Basics and Annual Multi Trip policies offered by TID automatically offer cover for rental vehicle insurance excess. The default cover is $6,000. See the PDS for further details.

The above features and benefits are a summary of cover only. Cover is subject to the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions outlined in the Product Disclosure Statement.

Travel Insurance for Hong Kong

Flying to Hong Kong? Get covered with Travel Insurance Direct

Why do I need travel insurance for Hong Kong?

Winding alleyways, hawker stalls and a rich colonial history. These are just some of the things that puts Hong Kong on the tourist map. However, with civil commotion, severe weather, and threat of Dumpling related mishaps there’s a lot that can go wrong on your Hong Kong adventure. TID offers travel insurance for Hong Kong with a wide range of cover.

What am I covered for when going to Hong Kong?

When visiting Hong Kong, you will have access to several benefits with TID travel insurance. It all depends on which level of cover is best suited for your trip - The Basics, DomesticThe Works , and Annual Multi Trip plans. Some of the benefits we offer include:

  • Cover for overseas medical expenses
  • Medical repatriation and evacuation
  • Cover for lost, stolen, or damaged valuables
  • Cover for lost, stolen or delayed baggage
  • Cover for cancellation or trip delay
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events.

Get a quote to get your next domestic or international adventure underway today.

What to look out for when travelling to Hong Kong

If you plan to go to Hong Kong in the Spring (March to May) and Summer months (June to August) then you may encounter a typhoon or two.

Hong Kong experiences around six typhoons a year on average. Thankfully, the city has a warning system to help keep everyone safe. The system grades storms from 1 to 10. 1 is the weakest, while 10 means you don’t want to be outdoors and without a really good raincoat.

Luckily TID offers cover for severe weather events. Whichever TID policy you opt for, if you are forced to cancel or rearrange your trip due to a sudden or unforeseen event such as a natural disaster you will be covered. In order to make a claim, though, you need to ensure you purchased your policy before the natural disaster became a known event. You can keep a track of travel warnings and alerts here.

Always refer to the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website for current travel alerts affecting Hing Kong before you buy a policy, before you leave Australia, and during your travels.

Traveller tip 1: You will definitely need to grab an Octopus card if you’re going to Hong Kong. The Octopus card is the easiest way of paying for any public transport in Hong Kong, this includes trams, buses, and ferries. It will also come in handy if you want to buy cinema tickets, use it for vending machines, and at convenience stores, supermarkets and a wide range of restaurants and chains. The cards can be bought and topped up at 7-Eleven and Circle K stores and MTR stations.

Medical cover and 24/7 emergency assistance

Australia does not have a reciprocal health care agreement with Hong Kong. You should consider TID travel insurance for overseas medical and for medic al evacuation and repatriation.

If you’re in an emergency medical situation, please get in touch as soon as you can with our Emergency Assistance Team. The EA team is ready to assist you 24 hours 7 days a week in medical emergencies. The EA team can help with:

  • Medical care
  • Help find the nearest medical facility if you’ve gone off grid.
  • Medical transfer to a hospital or repatriation to Australia where necessary
  • Provide multi-lingual support
  • And many more.

Traveller tip 2: when travelling abroad you should always make sure you drink responsibly. If you suffer an injury or illness or if your expensive handbag is stolen because you didn’t pay attention to your surroundings while under the influence of alcohol or drugs you will not be covered if you intend to make a claim. You should also be highly cautious in Asia of accepting drinks, gum, or drugs from strangers, as there is a high prevalence in many countries of spiking and sexual assault.

Will I need a visa if I’m travelling to Hong Kong?

Hong Kong has separate immigration regulations to China. You won’t need a tourist visa if you stay less than 90 days. In all other cases, you'll need a visa. Contact the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Sydney for details. If you're travelling from Hong Kong to mainland China, you'll need a PRC visa.

Traveller tip 3: if you are unsure what to take on your trip you can check out the TID packing list with all of the essentials, including travel insurance essentials, you may need on your trip.

The above features and benefits area brief summary of cover only. Cover is subject to the full terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions outlined in the Product Disclosure Statement.

Travel Insurance for Germany

Travel insurance cover for your German adventure

Why should I consider travel insurance for Germany?

The world-famous beer halls of Munich, the exciting night life in Berlin and the lush countryside are just some of the things Germany offers to tourists. However, with industrial strikes, severe weather, and the ever-present danger of pretzel mishaps there's also a lot that can go wrong. Luckily TID offers travel insurance for Germany.

What am I covered for when going to Germany?

When visiting Germany, you could have access to several benefits with TID travel insurance. It all depends on which level of cover is best suited for your trip - The Basics, The Works , and Annual Multi Trip plans. Some of the benefits we offer include:

  • Cover for overseas medical expenses
  • Medical repatriation and evacuation

Traveller tip: Aussies travelling to Germany can benefit from 90 days of Visa-free travel within the Schengen zone. However, if you wish to stay longer than 90 days, you must apply for a Schengen visa. Make sure to check the visa requirements for all countries you’re travelling to in Europe, including non-Schengen European countries.

What to look out for when going to Germany

Theft and pickpockets

Like anywhere around the world, you’ll need to look out for pickpockets and always keep an eye on your valuables when in Germany. While most German people are friendly, there is always the chance that an opportune thief will strike when you’re not looking.

For example, Germany has a well-developed bus and rail transport system. However, petty crime still happens. Take care of your personal belongings, particularly on trains and in major transport hubs. Don't leave your bags unattended on trains, or when in tourist hotspots. Keep copies or originals of receipts for any gear and valuables that you purchase.

Severe weather events

Depending on when you visit Germany, you’ll need to be aware of possible severe weather events such as snowstorms if you’re visiting in the Winter months (November to March), and tornadoes, and floods. You can keep a track of travel warnings and alerts here.

Traveller tip 2: if you are unsure what to take on your trip you can check out the TID packing list with all of the essentials you may need on your trip.

Activities and sports injuries and gear cover

With so many incredible outdoors destinations to choose from, Germany has something that will appeal to those travelling with children, ski and snowboard adrenaline junkies, and casual weekend outdoorsy types looking for a cruisy hike or bike tour around town. Whether you’re into your snow sports (*cover for snow sports only available when you have selected the Snow sports cover option and paid the additional premium cover option), you’re a water baby, or you prefer to get your kicks from bungee jumping or scuba diving, you can be covered for a wide range of sports and activities.

If something goes wrong and you injure yourself, a TID policy may be able to help with medical assistance, evacuation, and in the worst-case scenario, repatriation back home to Australia if medically necessary and approved by us. If you’ve decided to travel with your own surfboard or golfing equipment, there’s cover (benefit limits apply) on The Works and Annual Multi Trip plans to hire replacement equipment if your own is accidentally lost, delayed, or damaged during your trip.

Cover for cancellation and unexpected airline delays

We can offer cover under the ‘Cancellation and additional expenses’ section for your planned trip if your pre-paid scheduled public transport services or pre-paid tour have been cancelled or restricted by your carrier or service provider because of severe weather, natural disaster, riot, strike, civil insurrection, or hijacking. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for further details.

Additionally, if you’re stuck at the airport and need to get to your next German city before you miss that music festival or Berlin food and beer tour, then you may be covered. Our airline delay guide has all the information about delays caused by a carrier, what you'll be covered for and some things to look out for when it comes to your airline.

We aim to keep you informed about events around the world when they happen, so keep an eye out for travel alerts on our website, however please check smartraveller prior to travelling or are planning to travel to Germany and any other countries.

Travel with confidence

Our travel safety team at TID work to keep customers informed and publish information on major events on our website. Contact the Emergency Assistance team day or night as required.

At Travel Insurance Direct we offer a policy that may suit your particular holiday to Sri Lanka, whether it be Basic, The Works or Annual Multi Trip. So let us take care of the 'What ifs' and you get back to choosing your day trip adventures.

What can travel insurance cover me for while I’m in Sri Lanka?

Cancellation/Deferment

As much as it would be handy, none of us can predict the future. There’s no question that those who venture to Sri Lanka do so with their sights on wild national park wanderings, tea plantation visits, and of course, beachside bliss and mountain magic. As much fun as all that sounds, trips can be cut short thanks to injury, illness, or unpredictable weather.

TID travel insurance covers 11 specific events – if these occur you may have cover if you must cancel your holiday, or come home early, as a result. For cancellation cover to apply, the event must have happened after your Certificate of Insurance was issued – that means if a landside occurs and your holiday is brought down with it, it’s too late to purchase travel insurance and hope you’ll be covered.

When choosing a TID policy, there is an option to increase the covered amount for cancellation by selecting a benefit limit (additional fees may apply). Remember, if you simply change your mind, you’re unlikely to be covered.

Sports and Activities

Adrenaline junkies who are avid surfers, white water rafters or scuba divers will know that adventure travel comes with a risk. If something goes wrong and you injure yourself, your TID policy may be able to help with medical assistance, evacuation, and in the worst-case scenario, repatriation back home if medically necessary and approved by us.

And if you’ve decided to take your own golf or surfing equipment with you, there’s cover available (benefit limits apply) on The Works and Annual Multi Trip plans to hire replacement equipment if your own is accidentally lost, delayed or damaged during your trip. For more on what TID covers, head here

Sri Lanka travel insurance FAQs.

What happens if natural disaster throws my Sri Lanka travel plans off?

Whichever TID policy you opt for, cover is available if you are forced to cancel or rearrange your trip due to a sudden or unforeseen event such as a natural disaster. In order to make a claim, though, you need to ensure you purchased your policy before the natural disaster became a known event.

I’m going surfing in Sri Lanka, does my policy cover me?

Surfing is one of the sports and activities automatically covered by your TID policy. This means you don’t need to pay an additional premium to get gnarly in the surf! Your surfboard, which is covered for theft and damage whilst in transit, is not covered whilst in use on the water.

Please note that there are specific conditions and exclusions for surfing. For example, there is no cover if you are participating in, or training for, a professional sporting activity - so while we love the idea that you surf for a living, we won’t be able to cover you in such instances.

When is the best time to travel to Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is a year-round travel destination – if you’re visiting the west coast or the south coast, October to March is ideal. If you’re visiting the East or North Coast, April to September is best. Either way, be sure to check Smartraveller for the latest travel information and refer to TID’s Travel Alerts & Warnings page regularly too.

Need a hand to understand your policy?

If you’re still unsure about coverage or have a question we haven’t answered online, our Customer Service team is ready and able to help you navigate your policy, what you may be covered for, and any documentation you need along the way.

The above features and benefits are a summary of cover only. Cover is subject to the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions outlined in the Product Disclosure Statement.

Travel Insurance for South America

Explore South America with travel insurance from TID

Why should I consider travel insurance to South America ?

The vast expanse of the Andes, the stunning beaches of Rio and the Gaucho cuisine of Argentina – that's just the tip of South American iceberg! However, with food poisoning, the ever-present threat of robbery and theft, there's a lot that can go wrong. That's why TID offers cover for a South American Adventure.

With TID travel insurance you have a number of plans to choose from when planning your South American getaway. Think about all the fun stuff to do in South America, like moving to the beats of samba at Rio Carnival, visiting the beautiful city of Buenos Aires and enjoying a proper asado, or maybe getting that awesome selfie you’ve been wanting at the Atacama desert.

While the last thing we want is to have to deal with an email or phone call dealing with an emergency or unexpected event, if it does happen then we are here to provide some flexible travel insurance options to you and your loved ones.

Get a quote to get your South American holiday adventure underway today.

TID travel insurance coverage includes:

Traveller tip: don’t forget when travelling overseas, your Australian passport must have at least six months before its expiry date.

Things to look out for when going to South America

Theft and pickpockets

Like anywhere around the world, you’ll need to look out for pickpockets and always keep an eye on your valuables when in South America. While South America is a fun place to visit, and people are very welcoming and friendly, there is always the chance that a thief will strike when you’re not looking.

Always keep an eye on your bags and beware of pickpockets in the major cities such as Lima, Rio, Santiago, and Medellin to name a few. Do not leave your possessions unattended as bag snatching, pickpocketing and theft from cars is common in many larger cities. In some cities violent crime is an issue and it is wise to stay with others when exploring, especially at night. Keep copies or originals of receipts for any gear and valuables that you purchase.

Severe weather events

Depending on when you visit South America, you’ll need to be aware of possible severe weather events such as floods, wildfires, and earthquakes. You can keep a track of travel warnings and alerts here.

While the climate can vary throughout South America depending on where you are visiting and what time of year your going- Northern countries are generally more tropical, some others have very dry and moderate weather and in the Central regions, while the Southern parts of the continent are mostly cooler as you get closer to Patagonia.

Traveller tip: always refer to the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website for current travel alerts affecting any country in South America, any vaccination requirements, before you buy a policy, before you leave Australia, and during your travels.

Stay hydrated and beware of food poisoning

We recommend that you don’t drink tap water while in South America. Always be mindful that water-borne, food-borne, parasitic, and other infectious diseases (including, Hep A and B, cholera, malaria, yellow fever and typhoid fever) are prevalent in many countries across South America. Please note that this is not medical advice but just a recommendation by the TID team.

If you’re a foodie and your thinking of taking on some delicious street food or planning on drinking various beverages whether alcoholic (vino, cerveza, or pisco anyone?) or non-alcoholic drinks, you may want to be careful where you choose to eat and always drink in moderation. While street food or local restaurants food is for the most part clean and cheap, you may want to be mindful when giving in to the temptation of street food as you could end up stuck on a toilet for days rather than out exploring the vistas or meeting the locals.

We recommend you stick to drinking bottled water, wash your hands before eating, and be cautious of ice, unwashed or unpeeled fruit and uncooked vegetables.

Prepare for altitude sickness if you’re hiking or visiting Bolivia and Peru

If you’re planning to travel to Bolivia and Peru, you’ll most likely need to be prepared to experience altitude sickness, which can be both unpleasant and dangerous.

Always have altitude sickness tablets in your backpack and drink plenty of water. Eating carbohydrate-rich foods may also help (of which there are plenty to choose from like empanadas, churros or pan amasado), as can walking slowly to give your body a chance to adjust to the higher altitude.

South America travel insurance FAQs.

What's the best time to travel to South America?

South America is just a vast continent that there's no single ‘perfect time’ to visit. For example, June may be the best time to visit the Amazon, but February is the best time to visit the Galapagos. We suggest you look into the best time to travel country by country as opposed to the whole continent.

What do I do if I fall ill or I’m injured while in South America?

One of our benefits is that you may have access to emergency overseas medical treatment and expenses incurred overseas. You may have had an injury while doing outdoor activities or you over-indulged in too much food and drink. This means that if you’re hospitalised or have to see a doctor, for example, due to food poisoning (or anything else), you may be covered. If you find yourself in need of emergency medical assistance reach out to the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible, they can arrange for your medical treatment on the ground and answer any urgent questions.

Am I covered for multiple countries within South America?

We offer travel insurance cover for most countries for many events. For example, if you plan to travel to multiple countries within South America, all you need to do is select 'South America' as your destination when you get a quote and add any countries in South America you know you’ll visit for more than 24 hours. You can also select multiple countries, regions or continents on one quote or if you’re a seasoned globetrotter, you can also select ‘worldwide.’ Note that there are regions and countries that are not covered by TID, so make sure to check the details on your Certificate of Insurance and subscribe to Smartraveller for the latest Australian Government travel advice.

What happens if my travel plans are impacted by severe weather conditions in South America?

If your flights are cancelled, delayed, or rescheduled due to severe weather conditions in South America, cover is available for reasonable additional travel and accommodation expenses.

The above features and benefits are a summary of cover only. Cover is subject to the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions outlined in the Product Disclosure Statement.

Travel Insurance for France

Cover you may need before your French adventure

Why should I consider travel insurance in France?

The Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysée and a countryside that is the envy of the world are just a few of the things that makes France a must-see destination for those planning to visit Europe. However, with industrial strikes, civil commotion and the constant threat of Baguette related injuries, a lot can go wrong on your trip.

That's why we offer a range of different types of travel insurance that you should consider before you pack your bags for France. Travel insurance can provide protection if your travel plans change, or an unexpected event disrupts your trip.

What am I covered for when going to France?

When visiting France, you could have access to several benefits with TID travel insurance. It all depends on which level of cover is best suited for your trip - The Basics,  The Works , and Annual Multi Trip plans. Some of the benefits we offer include:

  • Cover for overseas medical expenses
  • Medical repatriation and evacuation
  • Cover for valuables and tech gear
  • Cover for lost, stolen or delayed baggage
  • Cover for cancellation or trip delay
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events.
  • And many more.

Medical cover and 24/7 emergency assistance

Unfortunately, Australia does not have a reciprocal health care agreement with France. You may want to consider buying travel insurance in case you get sick from all that escargot and croissants or you get injured hiking in the French Alps. Travel insurance could come in handy if you end up in hospital or need to be evacuated to a medical facility, or even worse, repatriated back to Australia, as the bill could be quite hefty!

If you’re in an emergency situation, please get in touch as soon as you can with our Emergency Assistance Team. The EA team is ready to assist you 24 hours 7 days a week in medical emergencies. The EA team can help with:

  • Medical care
  • Help find the nearest medical facility if you’ve gone off grid.
  • Medical transfer to a hospital or repatriation to Australia where necessary
  • Assist with flight amendments when your trip has not gone as planned
  • And many more.

Cover for many activities and snow sports

France has some of the best spots in the world for travellers flocking to some beautiful beaches during Summer. It also has some great skiing and snowboarding hotspots that will appeal to anyone from casual weekend adventures to expert skiers.

Whether you’re planning a ski trip to Les Menuires, Tignes or Chamonix, you’re going on a weekend hike in the Mont Blanc circuit or the Asp Valley, or you prefer to get your kicks from a day of sand and surf in Biarritz or Hossegor, you can be covered for a range of sports and activities.

If something goes wrong and you injure yourself, a TID policy may be able to help if you need urgent medical assistance. If you’ve decided to travel with your own surfboard, skis, or scuba diving equipment, there’s cover (benefit limits apply) on The Works and Annual Multi Trip plans to hire replacement equipment if your own is accidentally lost, delayed, or damaged during your trip.

Top tips for travellers planning a trip to France

Tip 1: Always do your own research for any last-minute travel changes, flight delays or events that may disrupt your flight and travel plans. You should also check the Australian Government’s smartraveller website when travelling to France or any other country you plan to visit.

Tip 2: No country is exempt from the effects of a natural disaster and France is no exception.  TID offers cover for several natural disasters such as an earthquake, volcanic eruption, snowstorms, or wildfires to name a few, but there are terms and conditions you should know about. Always take time to read your PDS and view our travel alerts. You can also find out more in our FAQ about travel warnings.

Tip 3: France is part of the Schengen area, meaning you can enter without a visa in some cases. In other situations, you'll need a visa. Contact the nearest embassy or consulate of France for the latest entry and exit conditions. The France-Visas website can help determine if you need a visa to enter or transit France. Make sure to check the visa requirements for all countries you’re travelling to in Europe, including non-Schengen European countries.

Tip 4: Ensure you have a valid passport as many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months after your arrival date before they’ll grant entry to their country.

Tip 5: If you are unsure what to take on your trip you can check out the TID packing list with all of the essentials you may need on your trip.

Vietnam travel insurance FAQs

Do I need a visa to enter Vietnam?

As a citizen of Australia, you must acquire a visa before entering Vietnam. Vietnam does grant visas for Australian citizens on arrival. However, the visa application process is much easier if the Australian passport holder applies for a Vietnam visa online. For more information on how to apply for a visa go here. You can also visit the Smartraveller website to find out any travel requirements and handy information relating to Vietnam.

In Vietnam, you are only covered to drive a motorbike, moped, motorcycle or scooter when you hold the appropriate license to do so in Vietnam and in your home country of residence.

International Driver’s Licenses aren’t recognised by Vietnamese authorities and won’t give you the right to use the roads there legally. If you can’t ride on the roads there legally, you won’t be covered. Despite this, cover is available if an event occurs and you’re riding a motorbike as a passenger, wearing a helmet and you’re not intoxicated, provided the person in control has a full motorcycle licence that is valid both in the country of travel and in their country of residence.

For the full details including exclusions check out this page.

Am I covered for natural disasters?

As long as you purchase your policy prior to it being a known event, there is cover for out-of-pocket expenses, such as pre-paid airfares and accommodation, should you have no alternative but to cancel your trip. Alternatively, if you’re prevented from travelling and choose to rearrange your holiday to travel at another time or to a different destination, there is cover available so long as the cost of rearranging is less than the cost of cancelling the trip entirely.

New Zealand travel insurance FAQs

What is best time to visit New Zealand?

The best time to visit New Zealand is from December to March for summer activities and June to August for skiing and snowboarding adventures.

Do Australians need a visa for NZ?

Australian citizens can visit, work, and live in New Zealand without a visa. Australian permanent residents need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NzeTA). Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your expected departure date.

Am I covered if I’m going on a cruise from Australia to new Zealand?

TID covers cruising as a standard inclusion, which means you won’t need to fork out for additional premiums. You may want to consider TID travel insurance if you’re going on a cruise as you could be in for a rough ride on stormy waters if, for example, your cruise encounters unexpected conditions such as you falling ill mid-journey, trip delays you hadn’t counted on, or if you need to be medically evacuated off the boat due to a severe injury or illness, the repatriation costs alone can be exorbitant depending on the location.

Can I extend my travel insurance if I’m already overseas?

Need more time abroad? Travel Insurance Direct allows its policy holders the option to extend their policy as long as you meet the terms and conditions, you can find out more here.
Remember: terms, conditions, limits and exclusions to coverage will apply so read your policy carefully for full details.
