Domestic Travel Insurance for Trips Around Australia
For many Aussies a local getaway may feel low risk and an easier option than going to some far away destination, but unexpected disruptions can still happen in your backyard. Your dream holiday to Tasmania could be interrupted due to a delayed or cancelled flight, or that family escape to the Gold Coast could be derailed by missing luggage or a natural disaster causing chaos.
Why should I consider travel insurance for domestic travel?
When it comes to domestic travel, it’s easy to fall into the ‘Medicare covers everything’ trap. It’s an unsafe assumption. Medicare doesn’t cover the financial side of a disrupted trip.
Even within Australia, travellers can face:
- Flight delays due to airline disruptions
- Lost, stolen, or delayed luggage on domestic flights
- Unexpected illness or injury that forces you to cancel before departure
- Rental car damage or excess costs
- Trip interruptions from severe weather events, like bushfires, floods, or extreme weather
At TID we aim to keep you informed about events around the world when they happen, so keep an eye out for travel alerts on our website. However, please check Smartraveller for the destination(s) you are travelling to prior to travelling or planning to travel to a destination.

Specified items
Most personal valuables that are lost, stolen or permanently damaged are covered with our Domestic Plan. You can also choose to add additional cover by specifying items to cover their full value beyond the standard item limit with no depreciation applying for an additional premium during the purchase process.
