Does travel insurance cover me for stolen cash and/or online fraudulent activity?

TID travel insurance may offer some protection if your cash or cards are stolen while you’re overseas, but it’s important to understand what’s covered and what’s not.

What is typically covered?

With TID, cover for stolen cash and fraudulent card use is available under selected plans, such as The Works and Annual Multi Trip.

You may be covered for:

  • Cash stolen while travelling, as long as it was:
    • Carried on you at the time, or
    • Stored securely (for example, in a locked safe)
  • Fraudulent transactions on your debit or credit card if it was:
    • Lost, stolen, or skimmed during your trip

To be eligible, you’ll need to:

  • Report the theft to local police as soon as possible
  • Obtain a written police report
  • Follow any requirements set by your bank or card provider

Important: Keep in mind that cover limits apply, and claims can be declined if the loss wasn’t reported or if reasonable care wasn’t taken.

What isn’t covered?

Please be aware there are some important exclusions:

  • Theft or fraud involving family members or travel companions
  • Losses that are not reported promptly
  • Cash left unsecured (for example, unattended in public places)
  • Any expenses already claimed under another part of your policy

Examples of cash and card scams to watch out for

Example 1: Pickpocketing in Barcelona
A traveller had their wallet stolen on public transport. Because the cash was carried on them and reported to police quickly, they may be able to claim under their policy.

Example 2: Card skimming in Thailand
After using an ATM, a traveller noticed unauthorised charges. As the card was skimmed during the trip and reported to the bank immediately, TID travel insurance may help cover the loss.

Example 3: Unattended bag at a café in Italy
A traveller left their bag with cash inside unattended. As reasonable care wasn’t taken, this type of claim may be declined.

Tips to protect your cash and avoid scams

  • Carry limited cash and split it across different locations (wallet, money belt, bag)
  • Use hotel safes for larger amounts
  • Avoid using public ATMs in poorly lit or isolated areas
  • Enable bank alerts for transactions and monitor your accounts regularly
  • Use contactless or digital wallets where possible
  • Be cautious of “too good to be true” deals, fake tours, or phishing messages
  • Never share your PIN or banking details, even if someone seems “official”

What to do if you’re cash is stolen or you suspect a scam

If your cash is stolen or your card is compromised:

  1. Report it to local police immediately and get a written report
  2. Contact your bank to block cards and dispute transactions
  3. Notify the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team or claims team
  4. Keep all receipts, reports, and evidence to support your claim
  5. Submit your claim as soon as possible online
