Trip Cancellation Insurance

If you need to cancel a holiday, don’t compound the disappointment with financial loss: insure against cancellation of your trip!

Trip cancellation insurance is as simple as it sounds: if your trip is cancelled, your insurer pays you back in certain events for the transport and accommodation services you purchased in advance and for which you cannot obtain a refund. Trip cancellation insurance can also cover the gap between full price and a partial refund. Cancellation fees for courses or other services you planned to participate in can also be covered.

This kind of insurance helps if you have to cancel a trip because of events like:

  • Sudden Illness of a close relative sufferin a serious illness and/or sudden injury (Provided they were hospitalised, are not over 85 and reside in Aus or NZ
  • An accident befalling yourself or a travelling companion
  • Natural disaster at your destination – or at home (Provided there was not a mass media warning prior to the purchase of insurance).
  • Employers cancelling your leave (If you are in full time employment only)
  • Being called up for jury duty

If these events happen and you do not have cancellation cover, you will lose any money you have paid on flights, accommodation and tours.

What to look for in trip cancellation insurance

Trip cancellation insurance should start on the day you buy your policy, so that any event likely to cause you to cancel a trip is covered before you leave. The cover should also cover any events that cause you to abandon you trip once you arrive.

Medical conditions and trip cancellation insurance

Make sure you reveal any pre-existing medical conditions when considering trip cancellation insurance, as few insurers will accept the recurrence of a known condition as a valid reason for a claim. Travel Insurance Direct assesses travellers with pre-existing conditions on a case-by-case basis before issuing insurance.

Hints & Tips:

When making the region selection, choose the region where you will spend the majority of your trip and this will also cover you for all other areas you travel to.

For example, if you are spending 3 days in Singapore, 2 weeks in the UK and 4 weeks in Europe, select 'Europe' as your destination and you will be covered in Singapore and the UK also.
