Health Fund Travel Insurance

Not all insurance is created equal and not all insurers are specialists in travel insurance. Some health funds that offer travel insurance are:

  • MBF
  • Medibank
  • HBA
  • HCF

Here are a few things to consider before taking out a travel insurance policy with a health insurer:

  • Health insurers are not overseas travel specialists: Health insurers understand the Australian health industry inside out, but they don’t specialise in travel insurance. Specialist travel insurers make it their business to know all about the risks of overseas travel. They can provide that emergency expertise when you are travelling overseas.
  • Restricted cover: Medical expenses overseas can be astronomical, but travel insurance sold by health insurers often falls a long way short of what you could need if things go badly wrong on holidays.
  • The wrong cover: Becoming seriously ill while travelling is a rare event. You are far more likely to lose or break items like cameras or laptops. Some health funds travel policy provides lower limits for personal goods than Travel Insurance Direct’s basic product!
  • Sports lovers pay more: Many people travel overseas to ski, play golf or just ‘have a go’ of some unusual sport while they are on holiday. Travel insurance policies from specialists like Travel Insurance Direct will cover you for a wide range of sports, plus events like loss of sporting equipment or disappointment if the ski slopes are closed.

Hints & Tips:

When making the region selection, choose the region where you will spend the majority of your trip and this will also cover you for all other areas you travel to.

For example, if you are spending 3 days in Singapore, 2 weeks in the UK and 4 weeks in Europe, select 'Europe' as your destination and you will be covered in Singapore and the UK also.

Health Funds vs Travel Insurance Direct

Travel Insurance Direct is an Australian owned company specialising in travel insurance. We research the activities travellers love and provide cover that goes way beyond just accidents to include the things you really need, like cover for lost personal items and sports activities.

Our standard cover is generous: we pay up to $12,000 for lost luggage, including up to $4,000 each for items like laptops and cameras. Compare those limits with even the top cover provided by health funds and you will appreciate the difference.

In many cases, we are also cheaper: compare our premiums to those provided by other health insurers, and see for yourself.
